The University sent a letter to the affected people informing them that “a data security incident at Stanford University’s Department of Public Safety” had happened, compromising their personal information.

Stanford University said that additional personal information acquired by the DPS might have also been taken, but “there is no evidence that your information has been misused.”

Stanford University DPS realized that they had been the target of a ransomware incident in September 2023.

An examination indicated that the threat actor accessed the Stanford DPS network between May and September.

When the problem was detected, Stanford University notified federal and local law enforcement authorities and worked with cybersecurity specialists to “terminate the authorized access.”
