Nissan develops a metaverse experience that combines automobile history with driving instruction.
VRChat now offers the new Meta Quest experience.
On March 7, Nissan Motor Co. announced the debut of a new metaverse experience based on history and safety.
The new display, titled “Heritage Cars & Safe Drive Studio,” blends immersive renderings of three of Nissan’s most famous vehicles in history with interactive instructional safety exhibits.
According to a news release from Nissan:
“The studio is celebrating Nissan’s 90th anniversary year, which started in December. It showcases three legendary Nissan automobiles from the past, each situated in a beautifully built virtual setting that depicts its time period.”
The first display showcases the Silvia Q’s S13, a Nissan renowned worldwide for its fame as a drifting car. Users may look at the vintage car at the Heritage Cars & Safe Driving studio and learn about the effects of pedestrian clothing colors on drivers.
The second display features a mini-game that teaches
The last exhibit transports viewers back to the 1950s and 1960s in a setting “reminiscent of a classic American diner and drive-in theater,” where they may engage in a hands-on steering wheel spin activity.
All three experiences were produced along with academics from Japanese institutions. These new metaverse exhibitions are accessible on the Meta Quest headset, among prior entries from Nissan, including the company’s first virtual test drive, which debuted in 2022.
Nissan also renovated four existing metaverse worlds in December 2023 to commemorate its 90th anniversary.
The company’s metaverse improvements come as hardware solutions for augmented and virtual reality evolve. The release of Apple’s first mixed-reality headgear in February 2024 marked increased rivalry for tech companies like Meta and Microsoft, who had pushed towards consumer and industry adoption over the last decade.
